Sen. Mazie Hirono expressed her anger at Republicans on Wednesday for giving Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser the opportunity to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee so that her voice can be heard before a vote to confirm Kavanaugh takes place.
Do they know how insane that sounds? Someone came forward, demanding to be heard, and Republicans set it up so she can come forward with her story. Somehow that makes Hirono angry? Wow.
“You know what happened right after she came forward on Sunday?” Hirono asked. “I think that’s when most of us read about it. That the committee said, ‘Oh, hey, we want to have a hearing with you. How about this coming Tuesday? Oh, if that’s not good, how about Thursday?’ The callousness with which she was treated.”
“You know, for any of us to have dealt at all with the experience of sexual trauma knows that this is a very particularly damaging kind of experience,” Hirono continued. “And you do not treat a person who has gone through this like, ‘Oh, well, hey, how about this?’ You know, I think it’s appalling.”
As Written By Town Hall:
“Attorney Debra S. Katz and her client, Professor Christine Blasey Ford, have “accepted” the Committee’s request to testify next week before the Senate next week regarding Professor Ford’s allegation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexual assaulted her three decades ago, but have asked Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) for another meeting this afternoon to discuss specifics regarding the process in which the testimony will occur. Based on Debra Katz’s request for more time to discuss specifics, it does not appear that they will actually testify under the proposed plan by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“Dr. Ford accepts the Committee’s request to provide her first-hand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh’s sexual misconduct next week,” Katz’s email read. But, she said the proposed order of business is “fundamentally inconsistent with the Committee’s promise of a fair, impartial investigation into her allegations.”
