Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris just introduced a new bill this week that would extend the school day for children by three hours.
This would have children leaving school at about 6 p.m. in the evening. That doesn’t even consider the time it takes to get home if they’re riding the bus either. In some cases, you’ll end up having children getting home between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The purpose of lengthening the day is supposedly so that they can better fit with parents’ work schedules.
According to CNBC,
Five-year grants of up to $5 million would go to school districts serving a high number of low-income families to push the end of the average school day from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in 500 schools. School days typically start at 8 a.m. Teachers and faculty, the bill says, would not have to work additional hours unless they sign up for an extra shift, for which they would be compensated at the rate they get during normal school hours.
The bill proposes that the grant money go to extracurricular activities like electives in “music, arts, athletics, writing and engineering,” Harris’ senate office told CNBC. The extra time can also go toward dance and theater programs, among other enrichment activities, the office said. but it leaves the scheduling of the day open to school administrators.
This bill is so stupid for a multitude of reasons, but let me explain a few.
First, consider what I mentioned above and how late these children are going to be getting home. This is going to further destroy the family dynamic. Most people don’t actually work that late. Where I live, most people get off of work between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
What about dinner? Are they going to have to pay for another meal every day now? And if this bill is really targeting low-income families, then they’re probably getting the government to pay for their meals and by that, I mean us tax-payers. The government doesn’t pay for anything, WE THE PEOPLE do! And that is done by theft from the government.
What about the time to do homework?
What about time to play outside? It is vitally important for children to get playtime and fresh air. In today’s world, recess is taken away many times and kids aren’t given the chance to burn off some of that energy.
I could go on and on, but let me just reiterate that this bill is garbage.
