Hackers Strike Yet Again, and This One Is Going to Hurt Us

These hacking incidents are certainly getting out of hand.

What is with these companies have poor cybersecurity? Now that this seems to be a growing trend, if certain companies don’t step up their security, we’re going to be in for a world of hurt.

This time, as you may have heard, the company is JBS which is one of the largest meat processors in the world. One-fifth of US beef production was wiped out after JBS paused processing at five of its biggest beef plants which manage a total of 22,500 cattle per day.

This is the third attack in less than two months and this one might hurt depending on what happens.

NBC reported,

JBS, one of the world’s largest international meat processors, was hacked Sunday, the company said in an email, forcing the company to take systems offline and stop work in North America and Australia.

The company maintains 11 beef processing facilities in Australia and 26 chicken processing plants in the U.S.

At least six JBS locations in the U.S. posted on their respective Facebook pages for workers to not come in Tuesday, an NBC review of their posts found.

One such post, from JBS’s beef processing plant in Grand Island, Nebraska, wrote: “Team member: This weekend our company was the target of a cyberattack that has impacted our IT systems. As a result, we will not operate tomorrow. ONLY MAINTENANCE AND SHIPPING ARE SCHEDULED TO WORK.”

You know what really makes all of this interesting? The industries that seem to be getting attacked are those that the Biden administration has been attacking, that is to say the meat and oil industries.

Is this just a nice convenience for them? Who knows? But if you ask me, when it comes to government involvement in something, there are no coincidences. There are only well-coordinated manuevers.

But in all reality, I think if the government is going to do something worthy of commendation in all of this, they need to work with companies to dramatically increase security for not just large businesses, but in other areas as well, including the government themselves because we’ve seen them hacked more than once now as well.

I think some sort of blockchain security measures need to be utilized.

UPDATE:

The FBI has now determined that it was the Russian-linked “REvil and Sodinokibi” who are behind the JBS hack.

As the lead federal investigative agency fighting cyber threats, combating cybercrime is one of the FBI’s highest priorities. We have attributed the JBS attack to REvil and Sodinokibi and are working diligently to bring the threat actors to justice. We continue to focus our efforts on imposing risk and consequences and holding the responsible cyber actors accountable. Our private sector partnerships are essential to responding quickly when a cyber intrusion occurs and providing support to victims affected by our cyber adversaries. A cyber attack on one is an attack on us all. We encourage any entity that is the victim of a cyber attack to immediately notify the FBI through one of our 56 field offices.
