Who is ISIS-K and What Role Did They Play in the Airport Attacks?

You don’t need me to tell you how bad the matter in Afghanistan is going. The sad thing is, I don’t think this is the end.

Everything turned deadly in an instant under Biden’s watch and we’ve got to get everyone out of there by the end of the month.

So what happened?

The rumor going around is that it was an attack from the ISIS-K group that Joe Biden mentioned during a press statement (I won’t call them conferences because he just reads a script and leaves) the other day.

I’ll be honest, that was the first time that I have heard of that group. Of course, we know about ISIS, but ISIS-K? What is this exactly?

The group is known as “ISIS-K,” which specifies it as the “Khorasan” branch of the Islamic State in Afghanistan. Khorasan is a wider historical region and “a vast territory now lying in northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan, and northern Afghanistan,” per Britannica.

A 2018 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies noted,“Like the Islamic State’s core leadership in Iraq and Syria, IS-K seeks to establish a Caliphate beginning in South and Central Asia, governed by sharia law, which will expand as Muslims from across the region and world join.”

On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that the group was formed six years ago “by disaffected Pakistani Taliban.” It has gone through with dozens of attacks in Afghanistan this year. “American military and intelligence analysts say threats from the group include a bomb-laden truck, suicide bombers infiltrating the crowd outside Hamid Karzai International Airport and mortar strikes against the airfield,” the outlet reported on Wednesday.

War is about to be waged in Afghanistan and it’s not going to be pretty. I’m still of the opinion that once we’re out of there, there is going to be an attack, but there has to be some sort of military presence by Afghanistan’s military first because we can’t just bomb the crap out of them and expect nothing bad to happen. Someone needs to prevent them from gaining control again and to prevent ISIS-K from taking over.
